On Tuesday 21 June 2022, we will hold our seventh annual student conference on popular music research for IASPM Benelux at the University of Amsterdam. This one-day event will offer a series of panels led and presented by students at all levels of their academic careers. The keynote lecture for this year's conference will be given by Dr. Graham St John (University of Huddersfield) and is hosted by Amsterdance, the ASCA electronic dance music research group of the University of Amsterdam. At the end of the day, we will also announce the winners of the BA and MA Popular Music Thesis Prize 2022, organized and presented by IASPM Benelux.

Despite the challenges that 2021 presented, we were – with your help – able to achieve a number of exciting things. While we had to (with great sadness) cancel the IASPM Benelux conference, “RE-peat, please!”, we were not idle. To keep everyone connected during these socially distanced times we started our new IASPM Pop Talks series. The IASPM Benelux and the Vereniging Nederlandse Pop Podia and Festivals (VNPF) invites student applicants to apply for the Bachelors and Masters Popular Music Thesis Prize. This prize honors outstanding research by students (previously enrolled in a university/university of applies science in the Benelux region) writing about popular music. The prize is to award the best-researched and best-written BA and MA thesis on some subject related to popular music.

What marked the beginning of international Popular Music Studies as an academic discipline? The most common answer is arguably the “Popular Music Perspectives" conference held at the University of Amsterdam in June 1981 that directly led to the establishment of IASPM. At the end of the day, we will also announce the winners of the BA and MA Popular Music Thesis Prize 2020, organized and presented by IASPM Benelux and VNPF.

IASPM BENELUX POP TALKS²: Double Book Launch: Remixing European Jazz Culture & Voices Found: Free Jazz and Singing
The second IASPM Benelux Pop Talks will take place online on Wednesday, January 27th from 17:00-19:00 (CET). It is organized in collaboration with Music Matters in Groningen and will be a double book launch event celebrating the release in 2020 of Remixing European Jazz Culture by former IASPM Benelux chair and Popular Music Studies professor at University of Groningen, Dr. Kristin McGee, and Voices Found: Free Jazz and Singing by current IASPM Benelux secretary and Popular Music Studies professor at the University of Groningen, Dr. Chris Tonelli.
